The rise of tourism and recreation in Benzie County can be traced to early resorts that arose along the shores of Crystal Lake in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  With new rail access, and new passenger steamers, visitors began to look for ways to enjoy a summer vacation in Northern Michigan – and Crystal Lake became a popular destination.

For an up-close look at these resorts, we will take a “virtual trip” around the lake on board an early steam launch, the Outing, brought to Crystal Lake in 1901.  Starting Terp’s Pavilion in Beulah, we will travel around the lake, making stops at Van Deman’s Land, the Mollineaux Inn, Robinson’s Ottawa Resort, Crystal Pautz Resort, Three Pines Inn at Crystalia, Oberlin, Pine Bluffs (Chimney Corners), Glen Malier, Glen Eyrie, Glen Rhoda, Juanita Park, Windermere at Glenwood Park and finally back to Beulah.
