Volunteer with the Benzie Area Historical Society

Volunteering is a Wonderful Way to Support the BAHS

Volunteer Opportunities

Make Benzie History and Volunteer!

Every day the Historical Society’s volunteers bring skills, life experience, energy and passion to supporting our mission and the work of our staff.  They are the backbone and lifeblood of our success.

If you are over 18 and are looking for an enriching and rewarding experience, then volunteering for the Historical Society at the Benzie Area Historical Museum or Drake School Museum may be for you.

Please join us on Thursday, May 19, 4-6 p.m. for a Volunteer Open House.  Staff and volunteers will be on hand to share their experiences with you and to answer questions.

Refreshments and snacks will be served.  Kindly rsvp to info@benziemuseum.org or call (231) 882-5539.  Bring a friend!

Who volunteers at the Historical Society and Museums?

They are historians, teachers, stay-at-home parents, students, hobbyists, retirees and more—and in 2021 our volunteers donated over 10,100 hours to the Historical Society!

You don’t have to be an expert to be a volunteer, simply a desire to make a difference and have fun along the way.  Training is provided for all positions.

What do volunteers do?

Some volunteers elect to put the skills used in their careers and professions to work while volunteering; others look to learn new skills or perform more routine tasks.  It’s up to you!

Volunteers actively work to enhance our artifact collection, advance our historical research, and share their passion for Benzie County’s history with people like you.  They support our important educational programming, helping BAHS achieve its mission to inspire future generations and leave a lasting legacy.

You can find them engaging students with hands-on artifacts in their elementary classroom, sharing details from their personal interactions with historic figures such as Bruce Catton, or contributing their time and talents to behind-the-scenes research, archival documentation, or administrative tasks.

Current needs include:

  • Greet Museum and Drake School visitors during the summer
  • Catalog museum objects, photos, and postcards into our computer-based catalog
  • Video and/or edit oral history interviews.
  • Photograph exhibits, programs and events, and Museum activities
  • Perform small repairs to artifacts i.e., sewing repairs to fabrics, cleaning small motors/guns/leather items
  • Research and write about local history including events, places, place names.
  • Junior Historians:  As we expand this elementary curriculum-guided program, we’re looking for retired educators interested in working with area middle- and high school teachers and students.
  • Programs and Events:  Are you willing to lead or manage a program or event?  Or do you want to support the event by welcoming and registering guests?
