Blacksmith Program & Demonstration
Glen Haven blacksmiths Kerry Kelly and Tom Obrecht will lead this demonstration and program. They will relate the history of Glen Haven and DH Day as well as demonstrate a variety of blacksmith tools and techniques. They’ll make some items while you watch and will demonstrate the blacksmith working with a striker to work large pieces of metal. The sights, sounds, and smells of the blacksmith shop were very familiar to people living in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Kerry Kelly and Tom Obrecht will bring those sights and sounds to life in their demonstration.

Tour of the Historic Sleeping Bear Inn
Originally built between 1864-1867, the Sleeping Bear Inn served as a frontier hotel. In 1928, the Inn was enlarged and modernized and a Garage was added.
In 1979, both the Inn and Garage were individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The historic Sleeping Bear Inn is owned by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and leased to BEAR (a non-profit called Balancing Environment and Rehabilitation). Maggie Kato executive director, and Jeff Kato, treasurer, are leading the charge to respectfully rehabilitate these historic structures. You’ll get a sneak peek of some of the interesting things they learned when walls were removed. and learn more about their plans for the future of the Inn and Glen Haven.
