The Story of Aral – Benzie County, Michigan

by Theodore and Bonita Reuschel

Aral, a small lumber town, was located at the end of Esch Road where Otter Creek empties into Lake Michigan. The history of Aral includes busy sawmills, a murder and the Israelite House of David colony famous for their championship baseball team. Several sawmills were built and burned down. The last residents abandoned Aral in 1922. Currently, a ghost town in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore there is almost nothing left of the original town.
