Teachers and students interested in learning about the National History Day Contest are encouraged to attend an informational program offered by the Benzie Area Historical Society on Tuesday, January 24, 4:00 p.m.

The program will be presented by Jack Ducote, a local high school senior who placed first in Michigan and seventh in the 2021-2022 national competition, at the Benzie Area Historical Museum.

National History Day is a year-long, themed competition for 6th- to 12th-grade students in which they research and present on a topic of their choice.  A presentation could be an exhibit, an historical paper, a performance, a website, documentary or other format. The National Contest is the final stage of a series of contests at local and state/affiliate levels.

Ducote, will present an overview of National History Day and how it works, talk about themes, and share his presentation, “Rigorous Debate, Diplomatic Failure, and America’s Worst Day:  The Road to Pearl Harbor.”

A dual Crystal Lake/California resident, Ducote represented Benzie County at the national event with nearly 3,000 students from all fifty United States, Washington, DC, Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and international schools in China, Korea, and South Asia.

“I would love to have more [local] students…compete!” Ducote says.  “I’ll talk about why National History Day is a good and fun extracurricular activity.”

Students and teachers from the region are encouraged to attend.  The Historical Society also welcomes community members interested in viewing Ducote’s winning exhibit and hearing his presentation about Pearl Harbor.

The January 24 program will be held at the Benzie Area Historical Museum at 4:00 p.m. The Museum is located at 6941 Traverse Ave, Benzonia.
