Please join us for this month’s Benzonia Academy Lecture entitled “Prohibition in Hamtramck”, which promises to be interesting, entertaining and will most certainly include colorful characters.  During the Prohibition years, Hamtramck was a hub of illegal and illicit activity. All sorts of thirsty Detroiters, from elected officials to members of the notorious Purple Gang, went to Hamtramck for a quiet drink. Hamtramck became known as the “Wild West of the Midwest” as it attracted national attention for the nefarious activities that flourished there.

Greg Kowalski, executive director of the Hamtramck Historical Museum, will present the lecture next Thursday, February 11 at 4:00 p.m. Kowalski is the author of twelve books on Hamtramck including Prohibition in Hamtramck available on Amazon.
